History

Forsyth County is located just northeast of Atlanta, Georgia and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The County was partitioned in 1832 from a section of the Cherokee County territory along with nine other counties in the area. Forsyth County was named for John Forsyth, Governor of Georgia from 1827-1829. The early years in Forsyth County, land was mainly used for agricultural purposes.

During the 1950’s with the introduction of the poultry industry, the county saw a steady economic growth.
Forsyth County continues to be one of the largest Poultry providers in the state, with several plants and distribution centers here in our community. In addition to the poultry industry, for the past 30 years Forsyth County continues to be home of small, non-agricultural manufacturing firms and light industrial companies. More growth came to the county in 1971, when Georgia Interstate 400 was started and completed ten years later. It was then that Forsyth County saw the largest real estate ‘boom’, when many relocated here and called our community ‘home’.

Forsyth County continues to be a very affluent community due to its proximity to Atlanta and the commuter appeal for people working in Atlanta. During the recent suburban sprawl and skyrocketing housing prices of surrounding counties, a large amount of affluent professionals moved to Forsyth County. Additionally, Forsyth’s nearness to Atlanta and the Blue Ridge Mountains, along with bordering the 37,000 acre Lake Sidney Lanier makes Forsyth County a perfect place to live and do business! Forsyth continues to remain one of the fastest growing communities in the nation, and with a School System that ranks among the highest, it is no wonder people love to live in Forsyth County!

The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce was founded in February of 1954. Sidney Wing was the first President of the Chamber and started the organization with only $36.02 in the bank and $15.00 cash in hand. During the early stages of the organization forming, investors met once a month at Sawnee EMC.

Since the inception of The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber, the purpose has remained the same; increase wealth and promote a better community life for all. Our organization continues to be a long time leader in Economic Development and a standing supporter of The Forsyth County School System.

The Historical Society of Forsyth County is also a great resource for information on Forsyth County.
